Chapter 1: Introduction

Problem Statement

The significance of values on human behaviour and business success has been studied quite extensively. There are many arguments (e.g. Davidson & Burke, 2004; Bilimoria & Piderit, 2007) about women and men's leadership since as more women enter the expert and decision-making workforce worldwide. It has become stereotype to say that men's are better leaders and more likely to be better CEO's but is it really truth? According to Wall Street Journal analysis since late 1982 until 2011, women and men's percentage position in management and leadership significantly changed. Following gender stereotypes are that women are more likely “to take care” rather than men “to take charge” in the business. These stereotypes lead to different leadership styles and wide range of different ways to solve raised problems and decision-making.

Researchers have taken many different roads towards the issue of gender and management. One road stresses the differences between women and men in leadership positions, claiming that female leaders are inherently different from male leaders. Fondas (2007, p. 275) has argued that “[…] gender is part of the very conceptualization of management”, and Brenner et al. (2009) assert that women possess certain characteristics, attitudes, and temperaments. Yet they do not explain how these characteristics manifest themselves in behaviour. This study evaluates men and women's competition as a better leader, investigates distinct contrast between the leadership styles of men and the leadership styles of women in business, critically evaluates the literature and discusses how gender dominance changed during the years until today.
