Introduction

This essay is about the conflicting theories in the children's literature. This essay gives detail about the two children's books “Paper Bag Princess” and “Hana's suitcase”. Both of these stories are renowned and very popular among children. The objective of this paper is to present the conflicting theories in both stories, and reasons for the conflicts. Both of the stories have different conflicts. This is an excellent example of different outlook of the novels.

Paper Bag Princess

Paper bag Princess is the story written by the Robert Munch, which very famous, and well-liked by children. The story is about a princess and her fiancé, who were living happily together. However, to create a twist in the story, the writer introduced an evil dragon, which captured the fiancé of the princess. In order to save the love of her life, the princess followed the evil dragon to rescue her fiancé (Gardner, Edwards & Munsch, 21).

In this story, there are only three characters, Princess Elizabeth, Prince Ronald and dragon. Princess is the main character in the story, and she has very important role in this story. In this story, she has a very prominent character of a traditional princess, dressed in pretty dresses and nice jewelry and taking care of her beauty. However, she cannot be compared to other princesses of the fairy tale world where the prince is the leading character who rescues the princess. In this story, the princess is the leading character who has to rescue her love from the evil dragon (Gardner, 20).

Another leading character in this story is the evil dragon. The dragon is obviously the villain in this story. He created trouble for the prince and the princess, destroyed their castle and captured Prince Ronald. He is also portrayed as a typical dragon of the fairy tale world, with green skin and capable of exhaling fire. On the other hand, Prince Ronald did not act as a classic prince and remained an unchanging character throughout the story. This story is different from other fairy tales because here the princess saves the prince from the dragon. But after getting rescued the prince insults the beauty of the princess. In order to save the love of her life, she gave no attention to her appearance, but the prince turned out to be a shallow person, who only cared about the outside beauty. Towards the end of the story, the princess refused to marry the prince. Towards the climax, it is realized that due to the dragon, the princess revealed the true face of the prince, who was more interested in the outside beauty and did not care about the feelings and care of the princess. She fought for him and rescued him from the dragon. This tells about another conflict, which is of, character v/s social expectations.
