Cross-Cultural Management in the Construction Industry



Abstract

With the advent of globalization, a widespread change in the management practices has been observed around the world. Like other business areas, construction industry has also seen a rapid change in its operations. The construction projects became more globalized. The concept of cross cultural and matrix teams emerged and the company's started undertaking construction projects abroad utilizing the host country's work force. Consequently, when two or more cultures met, the coordination and job performance issues came forth. In order to address what issues appeared and how the construction companies are responding to them, it is important to conduct a thorough study. This issue, though sound trivial, pose a major challenge to the international construction company's management. Following the need for knowledge of the relationship between culture and management, this paper highlights the literature review comprising a short account of the preceding researches undertaken. The research design and methodology has also been outlined which would help the execution of this research (Adrian, 1976,, 265) (Adrian, 1976,, 265) (Adrian, 1976,, 265).

Major construction Projects have involved the participation of individuals and groups for several centuries. The concept of globalization became widespread in the construction industry long before the word of globalization became popular. Due to this history of cross cultural construction projects, one would think that countries are flexible and mature enough to understand the cross cultural management issues in this industry, but this not exactly the fact. The socio- cultural changes in the past couple of years have influenced the globalization of the construction industry and its activities. As a result of this influence, the players face various challenges.
