Container Terminal Handling

Container terminals aim to handle, store and to load and unload cargo into and out of the containers where containers can be picked up, dropped off, maintained, stored, or loaded or unloaded from one mode of transport to another (that is, vessel, truck, barge, or rail). The container terminals that are being used in the world can be classified into six categories with regards to their ownership. These six categories have been mentioned below.

Public terminals

Carrier-leased dedicated terminals

Terminal-operator built

Operation terminals

Carrier built and operation terminals

Joint venture of carriers and terminal operators (Womack & Daniel, 2003)

Public Terminals

Shipping lines share with them the facilities that have been designed to facilitate the public terminals for the purpose of loading and discharging. However, they are charged tariff rates, and they are available on the “first come, first serve” basis. Therefore, there is no such priority that is given with regards to the berth usage expect the payment of the priority tolls. Calculations of container handling and the other charges are done on the basis of the tariff rates, and the quantity of discount rates that are being paid in the case of container volume. However, the quantity is fixed, and is agreed on the basis of the contracts that are signed. The three regions that are categorized under this operation include Singapore, Busan and Keelung.

Carrier-leased Dedicated Terminals

There are long-term lease contracts that are signed by the carriers. These are signed with the port authorities and are for their own exclusive use. However, rent is paid by the carriers for the facility they are availing from the port authorities who entitle them to the use of the berths. Carrier could be entitled to purchase and it may also install container handling facilities at his own account for the purpose of compensating for rents and facility charges. In this pattern of operation, comes the concept of owing to the joint services among shipping lines and single user long-term contracts are transferred to multi-user contracts in order to enable the shipping lines to share the same terminal. The countries that come under this operation include Kaohsiung,

Keelung (some parts of the port), Kobe, Yokohama and Tokyo (Ting, 2012).

Terminal-operator Built and Operation Terminals

By making a deposit and allocating to the port authorities in proportion to the total handling charges as agreed in the contract, a terminal operator leases container terminals or invests directly in the construction, operation of container terminals and handling ...
