CHAPTER 3: METHODLOGY

This chapter deals with the research method utilized for conducting the study. The study analysed the research question through the qualitative research process, including secondary methods of research. The research philosophy is interpretive in nature with the integration of inductive and deductive research approaches. The research strategy is the interpretive focusing on corporate social responsibility in Nigeria to cover all possible aspects.

Research Method

This research study had used the exploratory and descriptive approach towards analyzing the lessons learnt from corporate social responsibility in Nigeria. The objective of exploratory research is to define the questions and hypotheses of a subsequent study or determining the feasibility of a desired research procedure. The main purpose for an exploratory research is to gather as much data as possible in a specified area of research and formulate in a logical manner (Merriam, 2002). This type of study is often employed to gain a deeper knowledge and thereby forms a basis for further studies.

On the other hand, the purpose of a descriptive research is to present a complete description of a subject within its context to determine political and social-cultural effects on Shell's CSR Strategies in Nigeria. This research is of a descriptive nature because it describes, decodes and translates the phenomena as they exist. It is used to identify and obtain information on the characteristics of a particular problem or issue. The research is also exploratory in nature because it is uncertain what the precise nature of the problem is. This research method is used to achieve the aims and objective of the study as the focal point of the research was to understand the CSR phenomenon in Nigeria, its current practices were discussed in the chapter 4 of the study. Furthermore, the Shell process management in Nigeria along with the challenges faced by oil companies in Nigeria were critically analyzed in chapter 4.

Research Process

The proposed research method to be applied in this study was secondary research involving the undertaking of study on a qualitative basis. Qualitative research, also known as qualitative inquiry, is an umbrella term used to cover a wide variety of research methods and methodologies that provide holistic, in-depth accounts and attempt to reflect the complicated, contextual, interactive, and interpretive nature of the social world. For example, grounded theory, ethnography, phenomenology, ethnomethodology, narratology, photovoice, and participatory action research (PAR) may all be included under the qualitative label, although each of these individual methods is based on its own set of assumptions and procedures (Patton, 2002).

Data collection is usually purposive, the purpose which it's obtained and analysed usually influences its conclusion, the data collection procedure, hence this secondary data sources was carefully evaluated. It is a known fact that certain sources are more credible than information from other sources. This goes beyond the issue of their biases to their technical competences, resources and ...
