Craft & science

The term craft, rather than art, was used in this manuscript for several reasons. From a scholarly perspective, the word craft follows the definition of Lucie-Smith (1981). Textile crafts are items produced by hand using techniques of spinning, weaving, dyeing, printing, knitting, crocheting, sewing, embroidery, and other forms of surface embellishment. The craftperson produces items to be used for utilitarian, decorative, or ritual purposes. From an ethnographic perspective, the weavers, dyers, and printers in Malaysia, where this research originated, call themselves craftpersons or artisans and refer to their hand produced products as crafts.
