Executive Summary

Team management is a traditional function of sports management in general. The document will first examine the traditional view of team coaching and then compare that coaching view with the unique concerns of coaching a basketball team. In particular, the paper will focus on the unique aspects of controlling risk as related to the team members. Also, the paper will focus on the more prominent functions of anticipating risk and risk reduction in the coaching of basketball teams as compared with a typical coaching model. Finally, we will present an outline for the process of developing a thriving coaching plan.

To consider the basketball team coach's role in managing team effectively, we need to examine the traditional coaching concept. Coaching in a literal sense means to train and develop the team members and equip them with most relevant knowledge, skill, abilities, and other characteristics. In this basketball team mind-set, the major activities for a coach involve evaluating the team's current level and how to train them. However, individual development of team member is also done by the coach. In a traditional coaching, model there is no individual development and the training of a team gets done in contrast of one objective and a phenomenal performer does not get assistance from their coaches. However, not developing team members individually is a critical failure and very large expense for the team. Many teams would consider carrying team training along with individual player development to enhance the performance of individuals; ultimately, the whole team.

In the wake, of some publicized, tragic events that occurred throughout preseason training in both school and expert basketball, administrators, advisers, and coaches must take time to re-evaluate how conditioning undertakings, daily practices, and categories are undertook during extreme heat. Coaches need to believe in periods of legal liability and risk management when addressing this topic and to ask themselves how they can prevent such tragedies. In basketball alone, many high school and college sportsmen have past away from heat stroke since 1960. Even poorer, the per-year mean, is expanding, with many deaths in the past five years and killings because of rivalry.

If, you survey a group of coaches and ask them what their most valuable asset is that say their team members. However, if one were to ask the same panel of coaches so the only thing they lack in your team response would probably be trained and developed. While many teams spend countless dollars in training, seminars and development courses, others tend to leave this important issue of sports at random.
