Qualitative Research Evaluation

Comprehensive critiques of research articles are needed to identify the research findings that should be used in clinical practice. In this critique, we will examine the strengths and weaknesses of the title, abstract, purpose, literature review, conceptual framework, hypothesis or research questions, research design, and sample of a study by Diane Mcnaughton. It should be noted here that we are critiquing a quantitative research here and as such our critiquing framework will be made according to the standards, guidelines and methodologies defined in medical research models for quantitative research (McNaughton 2005).

Theoretical Model

The article builds upon the Model Peplau included in midlevel nursing theories, which are derived from work of other nursing-related disciplines. Results propose less abstract and more specific in practice that grand theories. They are typical of nursing practice and delimit the field of professional practice, patient age, action or intervention by the nurse and the intended result.

Assumptions laid down by Peplau

Peplau identifies two explicit assumptions:

Learning from each patient when receiving a nursing care is substantially different depending on the type of person who is a nurse.

Stimulating personality development to maturity is a function of Nursing. Its professionals apply principles and methods that guide the process towards resolving interpersonal problems (Yamashita et al., 2005).

In the model, the author expressed the following basic principles:

All human behavior has an important and stretching toward a goal that research can be a feeling of satisfaction and a feeling of satisfaction itself.

All that is an obstacle or an impediment to the fulfillment of a need, a drive or a goal is "frustration."

Considering that anxiety can happen in relationships, you need to be aware that the nurse may increase patient anxiety informing not enough or not answering questions etc.

Nursing, person, health, and environment by Peplau

Nurse-patient relationship

The essence of Peplau model, organized as a process, is the human relationship between an individual patient, or requires health care, and a nurse especially educated to recognize and respond to the need for help. This model, first published in 1952, describes four phases in the relationship between nurse and patient orientation, identification, exploitation, and resolution. Peplau Nursing recognizes science as a human science, which focuses on caring relationship.

Orientation: During the orientation phase, the individual has a perceived need and seek professional assistance. The nurse helps the patient to recognize and understand your problem.

ID: The nurse facilitates the exploration of feelings to help patients cope with illness.

Use: The patient tries to get maximum benefit from what is offered through the relationship.

Resolution: The old goals are gradually leaving aside as adopting new ones.

Acceptance of the theory for the nursing community

In professional practice a new perspective is seen as a new approach and a theoretical basis for nursing practice in therapeutic work with patients. The ideas have inspired a model for the practice of psychiatric nursing, explained so well applicable. The nurse-person user interaction is one of ...
