Abstract

In this study we try to explore the concept of “culturally competent care” in a holistic context. The main focus of the research is on “culturally competent care” and its impact on “healthcare sector”. The research also analyzes many aspects of “culturally competent care” and tries to gauge its effect on “healthcare sector”. Finally the research describes various factors which are responsible for “culturally competent care” and tries to describe the overall effect of “cultural competent care” on “healthcare sector”.

Cultural Competent Care

1.0 Introduction

Culturally competent care mentions to the set of attitudes, practices, and principles that endows an individual or agency to provide effective and efficient competent services to the individuals who are in harmony with the trends and norms governing the life of that entity. Other associated periods that have been utilized are cultural sensitivity, trans-cultural skills, diversity competence, and multicultural expertise (Berrios, 2003). There is a specific shortage of data on the effectiveness of cultural competency in provision of health care services. Provision of effective and culturally competent health care services is crucially important for the quick recovery of the patients because the lack of culturally competent services result in severe stress and mental trauma which is to be sustained by the patients requiring the services. Health programs in international health systems require integrating culturally competent care and supplying linguistic access. This item recounts the challenges in one homeland, the United States, and accounts on research investigations, which articulate the present gaps in gathering the overhead goals. Health care providers are compelled by both legal and ethical standards to supply such care (Berrios, 2003).

2.0 Literature review

2.1 Culturally competent care for workplace

Due to the multicultural modifications in US, the citizens of United States have started demanding culturally competent nursing care. The purpose of this research paper is to extract the available information and identify appropriate culturally competent care for the workplace (Ariel, 1999). After the incident of 9/11 in New York City increased the number of emergencies; demanding critical care for the patients belonging to different cultural backgrounds. In this scenario culturally competent care can only be provided by recognizing and understanding the distinctiveness in patient's cultural backgrounds. As an emergency room nurse in a small rural hospital, I was present when an elderly Native American man was brought to the emergency room by his wife, sons, and daughters. He had a history of 2 previous myocardial infarctions, and his current clinical findings suggested he was having another (Ariel, 1999). When the patient was being operated, he calmly informed the emergency room staff and physician that, other than coming to the hospital, he was following the “old ways” of dying. He had “made peace with God and was ready to die” and “wanted his family with ...
