Abstract

The differences in achievement among ethnic and socioeconomic groups, called achievement gaps, have been a problem in education for many years. There are achievement gaps among students of higher and lower classes and among students of different races and ethnicities. As a group, Black and Hispanic students perform more poorly on many standardized tests of academic achievement than do white and Asian students. After the passage of No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, many states and districts have made greater efforts to close the achievement gap.

Based on research in Geneva Gay and Gloria Ladson-Billings, AEL staff hypothesized that the focus on working closely with school staff and district to provide professional development and exemplary culturally responsive instructional materials in selected schools Kanawha County teacher would differentiated student behavior classroom. In addition, AEL staff believed that this approach would increase the capacity of schools to continue improvement efforts aimed at raising the academic performance of black students and others.

Research Design

The research design for this project consists of three quasi-experiments with two single treatments consisting of non-treatment groups (untreated matched control design with pretest and post-tests and various treatments) and with a design (design untreated dependent samples matched with control and various treatments) with a total of five groups: PTT, PTNT, NPTT, NPTNT and Comp.
