Democratic Vs. Republican Party

Introduction

The American politics is basically a two party system. The Democratic Party and the Republican Party are dominating the election since 1850s; the Republican Party came into existence in 1854. The two parties have their own ideologies that separate the members and candidates from each other. This paper compares and contrasts the two parties in terms of their ideologies, history, support, vote base and electoral campaigns.

Political System of United States

The political system of United States is a Federal Constitutional Republic. In this system the Head of State is the President, who belongs to one of the two parties (since 1852), Democrats or Republicans. This duopoly is known as two party systems (Nichols, 1967). A political party is basically an organization that seeks to influence the policies of government through nominating and getting their candidates elected on the seats of power. These political parties engage in protest actions and electoral campaign heavily to influence the opinion of people eligible to vote for them. These parties present their own ideology in a written from and publicize it on a public platform so that everyone can understand what they will be supporting by voting for their candidates.

Today, America is dominated by two political parties since 1850s, while the first president of United States George Washington did not belong to any political party. In fact the constitution is quiet with respect to the system of political parties. In the Federalist No. 10, James Madison elaborates that disregard of public good is made in rival factions conflicts. Decisions are made on the basis of majority and not according to justice or rights of minority.

The truth is that, political parties help society beyond electing their candidates winning for the office. First of all, these parties narrow down the choices of public by limiting the candidates. The candidates today, belong to one of the two major political parties and conform to the views of their party; this eases the decision for the public in understanding what they will be supporting by electing a candidate. Also, these parties bring issues in debate which is rarely thought of in normal life. The issues could have serious implications on the future if the country and this issue need to be taken after taking masses into confidence. These political parties become a platform for the task. Many of the countrymen will not even think of these issues if the electoral campaigns or political campaigns are not exercised.

Democratic Party

Democratic Party is one of oldest if not the oldest party in the world (Witcover, 2003). It is one of the two major parties in Unite States along with the second party Republican Party (Micklethwait, and Wooldridge, 2004). Like any other political party it holds a separate and distinct ideology on which it seeks support of citizens of United States of America. The party supports social liberal and ...
