Diabetes

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease more prevalent in older people, having a large increase in recent years due primarily to increased expectations of life of the general population, increased patient survival with diabetes and a higher incidence of diabetes as a result of changes in lifestyles. Diabetes is a chronic disease and it is difficult to treat. In the treatment of diabetes the focus must be on medical necessity for the management / avoidance as possible in the short term and long-term problems related to diabetes. There is an exceptionally important role for patient education, nutritional support, reasonable exercise, and self-monitoring of blood sugar, in order to maintain both short-term and long-term blood sugar levels within acceptable limits.

There is a need for precise control to reduce the risk of complications in the long term. This can be achieved in theory with groups of exercise, diet and weight loss (type 2), and various drugs by mouth for patients with diabetes (type 2 only), and the use of insulin (Type 1 and Type 2 do not respond to oral medications, mostly patients with diabetes for a long time). In addition, given the risks associated with the cardiovascular disease, lifestyle modifications should be made to control blood pressure and cholesterol. These modifications should be brought about by exercising more, smoking less or ideally not at all, and appropriate diet for consumption, and if necessary, with any of several drugs to lower blood pressure. Many Type 1 treatments include the use of a combination of peer regular insulin or NPH insulin, and / or artificial in combinations such as Lantus / Levemir and Humalog Novolog, or Apidra. Another treatment option for type 1 is the use of insulin pump, it uses the blood of the Lancet to penetrate the skin (usually finger), in order to draw blood to test for sugar levels.

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia secondary to relative insulin deficiency or his actions resulting in the development of degenerative changes in peripheral nerves, eye, and kidney and macro vascular complications affecting the heart, brain and peripheral circulation. To prevent these complications is important to emphasize early detection and strict glycemic control in all individuals regardless of age. The aging process involves a physiological regression of the body over time and it is important to recognize that the glycemic control and management of diabetes in this population should include ...
