Introduction

Skill: National Bureau for Students with Disabilities promotes opportunities to empower young people and adults with any kind of disability to realise their potential in further, continuing and higher education, training and employment throughout the United Kingdom. Skill works by providing information and advice to individuals, promoting good practice and influencing policy in partnership with disabled people, service providers and policy makers.

Skill has been working with a number of healthcare bodies to implement the provisions of the Disability Discrimination Act Part 2, which covers qualifications bodies, including the Health Professions Council, and to promote healthcare professions amongst disabled young people. We have recently produced a publication called 'Into Nursing and Midwifery', which is an essential guide for disabled people thinking about nursing or midwifery as a career. The publication includes information about applying, fitness to practise, funding and support, and the different routes into nursing and qualifications, as well as profiles written by disabled people about their training and work in the profession.

The competencies within essential skills clusters

Skill agrees that it is important to ensure everyone knows what is expected of a new registrant. Above all, this must include nursing and midwifery students, who need to have a clear view of what they are expected to demonstrate and achieve.

If the NMC develops new proficiencies, skills clusters and competencies, it must ensure that these are accessible and justifiable, as required under the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) Part 2. The DDA, as amended from October 2004, requires qualifications bodies, including the NMC, to ensure their standards are objectively justifiable. Higher Education Institutions that provide approved courses are likewise covered by the DDA (Part 4) with regard to admission and support for disabled students.

Care compassion and Communication

The midwife is able to demonstrate effective communications within her sphere of practice, including verbal, non-verbal and written communication. She should discuss her IT skills and understanding of issues of confidentiality. It is an opportunity to discuss self-awareness and reflect on perception of own communication skills.

Be attentive and share information that is clear, accurate and meaningful at a level which women, their partners and family can understand.

Protect and treat as confidential all information relating to themselves and their care.

Enable women to make choices about their care by informing women of the choices available to them and providing evidence-based information about benefits and risks of options so that women can me a fully informed decision

Ensure that consent will be sought from the woman prior to care being given and that the rights of women are respected

Treat women with dignity and respect them as individuals.

Work in partnership with women in a manner that is diversity sensitive and is free from discrimination, harassment and exploitation.

Provide care that is delivered in a warm, sensitive and compassionate way

Be confident in their own role within a multi-disciplinary / multi agency team
