A New Space for Music

Conveniently located in downtown Los Angeles, Walt Disney Concert Hall is one of the most acoustically sophisticated concert halls in the world. Bordered by 1st and 2nd roads, Hope Street, and Grand Avenue, it assists as the dwelling of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Los Angeles Master Chorale. (Coates 7)

The design to build a world-class concert hall in the town was commenced in 1987, when Lillian B. Disney, the widow of Walt Disney, pledged $50 million to the Music Center. The County of Los Angeles supplied the land for the concert hall location and capital to investment the hall's parking garage. Construction of the garage started in 1992 and was accomplished in 1996. The groundbreaking observance for the hall was held in 1999. Designed by Frank Gehry, the concert hall opened its doorways on October 20, 2003. (Wachtell 23)

Through the dream and generosity of Lillian Disney, the Disney family, and numerous other one-by-one and business donors, the town will relish one of the finest concert halls in the world, as well as an internationally identified architectural landmark.

From the stainless iron alloy bends of its hitting exterior to the state-of-the-art acoustics of the hardwood-paneled major auditorium, the 3.6-acre convoluted embodies the exclusive power and creative essence of the town of Los Angeles and its orchestra.

 

The Vision

In 1987, the late Lillian Disney made an initial gift of $50 million to build a world-class presentation venue as a gift to the people of Los Angeles and a tribute to Walt Disney's devotion to the arts. Since then, other presents and built up interest convey the Disney family's total contribution to over $100 million. The County of Los Angeles acquiesced to supply the land and important additional funding to investment Walt Disney Concert Hall's six-level subterranean parking garage.

In 1988, renowned architect Frank Gehry was chosen to conceive the convoluted, whose last form he revealed in 1991. The County began the construction of the parking garage in 1992, completing it in 1996. Construction on the Concert Hall itself started in November 1999. Also that year, the Music Center commenced a capital campaign to entire the construction funding. Many business, foundation, and one-by-one partners, along with the State of California, have contributed bountifully to the campaign due to the remarkable authority of Andrea L. Van de Kamp, Chairman of the Music Center, Eli Broad, Chairman of SunAmerica, Inc., and previous Los Angeles Mayor Richard J. Riordan. The Los Angeles Philharmonic supplied additional funding for the centre task and full funding for the Los Angeles Philharmonic Center(Valerie 5).
