Introduction

Diversity is the things about people that make them different, not just culturally but human differences. Having a multitude of differences in the workforce gives an organization the ability to utilize many ideas to reach one common goal. One could say that a diverse group of people together in one room can accomplish greater achievements than a room filled with the same types of individuals. In the workforce diversity can be gender differences, age, education levels, and marital status. Diversity in the workplace can also create diversity in the other areas of life. When companies value diversity it gives the organization the ability to utilize the opinions and viewpoints of all it employees to create a better working environment as well as allowing the employees to know that the company they represent cares about its workers. Manager's understand this concept of diversity and how important diversity is to the success of a companies ability to implement programs that continues to develop a harmonious and diverse workplace.

(1) Attracts a quality workforce

The HRM department has to conduct detailed job analysis, which assists the company to alter its existing job design and generate one suitable for TQM. Siegel (1996) proposes that the job analysts firstly have to gather data on the objective and the scope of the job tasks - job context, performance indicators and measurements, personal job demands, basic movements, work activities and skill requirements - through extensive study of the system and the sub-systems. Moreover the process chain and arrangement can be easily identified by tracing back the output to its origins. Once the necessary data has been collected, comparisons should be made between the existing job design and the one demanded by the TQM programs so that the required changes are made.

Recruitment and Selection

The HRM role extends beyond just training and development of the existing workforce. The HRM department should to develop recruitment and selection strategy, which supports and relates to the broad organizational goal. Therefore HRM should supply the company with high quality workforce, which perceives the essence of TQM philosophy (Simmons et al., 1995).

Planning

Business planning and implementation of plans should be a continuous process in to day's competitive business world. Plans should be constantly evaluated and enhanced in an effort to achieve the next level of success. Not only that, but also in order to ensure progress is timely and organization's mission, vision, and objectives has not changed.

Training and development is a process that begins with the orientation of a new employee and continues throughout an employee's career. It is important that the human resource manager develop training programs to improve employee skills and performance in a changing workforce.
