Do couples who live together before marriage have a higher success rate in marriage?

Introduction

Marriages are made in heaven and celebrated on earth; this popular phrase has lost its actual meaning, and it is more of a cliché to me. Marriages may be made in heaven, but they are also destroyed on earth. Marriage is a commitment between two people with different personalities, attributes, attitudes, aptitudes, perceptions, behaviors and a distinctive frame of mind. Commitment shapes itself into a compromise; this compromise is of understanding and giving priorities to one another (Stockard, 2002). If we analyze the human nature it is very obvious that human are bound to change, they are fatigued with the same sort of a routine, events, circumstances and people. Marriage is considered to be a delicate bound in which people are supposed to spend their entire life with someone who could be a complete stranger or an acquaintance.

Marriage is a social institution that creates a bond between two partners. This is socially recognized, either by legal or by way of custom. Marriage establishes a relation between the spouses and in many cases also between their families of origin. Similarly, the marriage legitimizes the parentage of the children fathered or adopted members, under the rules of kinship system in force. Nowadays, young couples are living together before marriage, and then when they think that they have a common interest and can live their life together, they eventually get married. This process does not have a higher success rate in marriage. The reason is that both have high expectations from each other (Madden, 2006). Once that expectation is not met, both end up fighting, and in the worst scenario, they get divorced. If the marriage is arranged, both partners do not have expectations from each others, and they initially tries to get to know their partner. During this learning phase, they fall in love and start accepting the way the other partner is, and their likes and dislike. In this case, both the partners start compromising for their partner, which leads to a successful life.
