Abstract

The study aims to identify the domestic violence in Florida from the view of mental health professionals' competencies and the effectiveness of supporting the effected women. The study uses the exploratory research in the form of secondary data collection and review. The purpose is to identify the frequency of domestic violence in Florida and the role of mental health professionals and government in controlling this issues and supporting the victims. The data is gathered through literature review. The findings of this study suggest that the domestic violence in Florida has been increasing and it requires special competencies and understanding of the issues of women in Florida. Florida licensed mental health professionals report that their graduate coursework training, graduate practicum and/or internship training as well as licensure and continuing education requirements do not contribute to their perceived level of competency in assessing and treating domestic violence. From this study it can be said that the support to the battered women need a comprehensive review of the professional knowledge and a restructuring of the social institution in Florida.
