Introduction

An important area of discussion in the philosophy of mind is the existence of the soul. One of the doctrines that states that the soul does exist is called 'dualism'; its name comes from the fact that it assumes that human beings made up of two substances: body and soul. Most dualists agree that the soul is identical to the mind, yet different from the brain or its functions. Some dualists believe the mind may be some emergent property of the brain: it depends on the brain, but it is not identical to the brain or its processes. Cartesian dualism, all mental activity, is inherently embodied. Research into the nature of mentality must thus account for how mind emerges from different forms of brain-body-world interactions. For the mind is fundamentally embodied in that thoughts, concepts, representations, and other aspects of our mental life depend on the body's perceptual system, as well as its capacity for environmentally sensitive movement and feeling (Sitek, 2010).

The movie The Matrix describes this dualism brilliantly. In the film, the Matrix is the world that we all experience, but it is not real. “The Matrix is everywhere,” says the character Morpheus. “It is all around us. The Matrix gives a visible portrait of an evil world that is a lie and in continual conflict with the true and good world. One must choose the truth and be given special knowledge of how to travel from the Matrix to the real world.

Dualistic Philosophy

The Dualistic philosophy explains that the human mind believed as a matter other than a physical matter. Locke, Descartes, and James were some of the acclaimed dualists who belong to the Interactionism philosophical system. Occasional ism, parallelism, and epiphenomenalism are some of the other perspectives of dualism (Morris, 2010).
