Dust Hazards Fire Protection Technology

Introduction

Technology Research Corp. (TRC), Clearwater, Fla., inventor of the Fire Shield Trademark cord set with built-in fire protection, is putting the technology to work to reduce the risk of fire propagating within an appliance. The technology snuffed out a fire in a toaster in a demonstration at TRC's booth during the National Hardware Show in August in Chicago. Connecting the braided shield of the cord set to metal surfaces makes the frame an extension of the sensing shield. When current leaks to the frame, power is disconnected. (Hart, 2005) The shield trip level is lowered to 0.5mA for this application. TRC has developed two application-specific methods for detecting an open flame within an appliance and disconnecting the power.

The first method calls for installing a photoelectric cell in the appliance. When a flame is detected, a contact is closed which interfaces with the cord set shield, thus disconnecting the power and putting out the fire.

This method can be manually reset after the flame has been eliminated. The second option is mounting a nomex (a strong flammable material with a high tolerance for heat) tape under tension holding open a spring-loaded contact. If a flame hits the tape, it breaks, closing the contact. This method of flame detection is not resettable.

The ability to interface with sensors and disconnect power adds a new level of safety to the Fire Shield cord sets, as appliance applications benefit from the technology.

Fire Sensor

Smoke detector uses the latest microprocessor technology and enhanced algorithms to sense smoke. The XP95-M Multi-Sensor includes both photoelectric and thermal sensing elements, which digitally transmit not only its address to the fire alarm control panel, but also combined data consisting of an analog value from both the photoelectric chamber and the thermal element for analysis, resulting in false alarm reduction.

Rising Smoke

Multicriteria technology smoke detector can scan 10 devices at one time and constantly monitors its environment for temperature, smoke, electrical noise and air particulate levels, significantly improving response time. Acclimate Plus can report an alarm within one second, and its dual bi-color LEDs flash green when normal and steady red on alarm.

In these days most important edge for building fire protection includes application-specific, multitask technological instruments or detectors. These technological detectors and the methods through which technological dust hazard work are improved from their predecessors in several ways.
