Education

Education in its broadest sense is any act or experience that has a formative effect on the mind, character or physical ability of an individual. In its technical sense education is the process by which society deliberately transmits its accumulated knowledge, skills and values from one generation to another.

Teachers in educational institutions direct the education of students and might draw on many subjects, including reading, writing, mathematics, science and history. This process is sometimes called schooling when referring to the education of teaching only a certain subject, usually as professors at institutions of higher learning. There is also education in fields for those who want specific vocational skills, such as those required to be a pilot. In addition there is an array of education possible at the informal level, such as, in museums and libraries, with the Internet and in life experience.

Nearly 10 million children and adolescents in the United States ages 6-19 are considered overweight. Over the last three decades the prevalence of overweight in adolescents has quadrupled from 4 percent in 1971-74 to 17 percent in 2003-06. One important way to prevent obesity is to increase physical activity. Schools can play a critical role in increasing physical activity by offering quality, daily physical education and other opportunities to recreate. Physical education not only gives children an opportunity to be active but it teaches them the skills they need to be active throughout their lifetime. Thus, investing in quality physical education in all schools for all grades is a logical and important step toward improving the health of the next generation.

A brief narrative description of the journal article, document, or resource.Deliberate Psychological Education is an emerging method for delivering psychological services. The focus is educational and preventive and the aim is to increase personal learning and psychological competence via educational experiences that integrate intellectual, conceptual knowledge with affective, personal knowledge. A number of psychological education issues are covered in this review. They are (a) an explanation for the emergence of psychological education at this time; (b) historical parallels in education, psychology and religion to deliberate psychological education; (c) the quest for a proper and substantial foundation for psychological education; (d) the politics of implementing and maintaining psychological education; (e) territoriality and the "bad news" concerning psychological education.

Its aims are:

* To promote the study and discussion of psychology in education.

* To stimulate research into matters related to the psychological aspects of education.

* To provide a forum for the discussion and exchange of ideas among those interested in the psychological aspects of education.

* To offer advice to the Society on matters related to psychological aspects of education and the training of teachers.

It achieves these aims in three ways:

* Communication of research findings;

* Lively discussion of contemporary issues both scientific and professional.

* Development of policy on key issues affecting psychology and psychologists in education.
