CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

Background of Study

Shift work has always been demanding, with its conflicting nature with the natural rhythms of human biology and impact on normal social life. There is no single-standard definition, standard schedule, or standard type of shift work. Accordingly, several different difficulties are related to shift work including personal, social, and organizational variables among others. Shift work may play various roles on different variables in an organization including wellbeing of personnel, motivation, job satisfaction, and many others (Parkes, 2009, 256).

Administrators seem to be mostly interested in getting the job done at all costs. What they might be missing is not looking at the issue from the perspective of the employee. If workers spend lengthy hours, with little to no chance of relaxation, especially when working under pressure, they might be pretending to do the job instead of getting done it efficiently.

Research Rationale

Although human beings are genetically predisposed for a waking period during daylight hours and sleep during the night, the demands of global economy now require a 24-hour working day. Shift work is currently very common in hotel industry as they provide services for 24 hours a day. Since shift work conflicts with the normal circadian rhythm for humans, it creates a number of issues for the employee working in shifts. Shift work disorders have been reported in as many as 10% of shift workers (Parkes, 2009, 259). Work schedule is a significantly important factor affecting various aspects of work as well as personal lives of workers, especially when it is outside the commonly established social patterns. However, today's global economy, as well as the nature of certain professions, unavoidably requires such unconventional work schedules, which is known as shift work. For that reason, it is important to know particular effects of shifts for the common good and benefit of employees, managers, and organizations.

This research, therefore, will be conducted in order to analyse the impact of shift working on the employees in hotel industry. It is important to pay attention towards employee satisfaction, their health, their incentives, their motivations, etc. Thus, this research will be highlighting different problems and issues of employees working in shifts.
