Discussion

Last Tuesday, I attended the concern with my friends at The Kennedy Centre, Millennium Stage. The concert was named as the Global, local, and Homemade Songs by Elise Witt. I look into the program, to find the names of the sings that will be played and the orchestra that will be playing them.

The music by Elise Witt exudes innate charm, wit, and worldliness which are topped with irresistible sing ability. One of the significant feature of her music that if found was that the vocal lines lend themselves to the choral treatment (McIver,2009). Elise witt and the small family orchestra played the homey, amiable, concert. The five member group conveys the music from the south of the Mason Dixin line down to the Central American and arranges them informally in guitar, mandola, clarinets, French horn, cello and the violin (Ramsey,2006). Most of the arrangement centered on the southern traditions from the mountain gospel singling to jazz. There were three songs by the mandola player Rick Ruggles which reminded of the cheerful songs about love, food and the Southern local color. Although the quintet is fond of Southern music, it is removed from the traditions it draws on; like the Kingston Trio or the New Christy Minstrels in the 1960's, it cannot help smoothing out its songs. As musicians, the quintet is competent but not virtuous. Still, in such folk music good-heartedness counts for a lot, and listening to Small Family Orchestra is like dropping in on a well-organized hootenanny.

One of the best songs was Mick Kinney's “Deeper than Love”. It was a slow number which created an aura of romance. There were more pointed songs about the state notably John Cutcheon's “No Mas, No More” (DeRogatis,2003). As far as Elise Witt; lyrics and the compositions are concerned. She is one the local treasures that not many people know about. She has one of the purest voices that audience like to hear. One of the important features of this concert was that Elise paid tribute to the old Motown style by several songs “My lazy way' and “In my heart”. These two songs specifically earned the audience applause (DeRogatis,2003). The work is known for being the best beasts in the concerto jungle preceded by "At my Heart” that made the atmosphere a ...
