Epistemological Approach of Leadership

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to analyze theoretical aspects of transformational leadership, and to relate them to the different epistemological approaches, in order to support research in this area which will in turn, contribute to the understanding of this phenomenon. Three epistemological approaches are considered: Empiricist Analytic, Rationalist and Social-Historicist. Theoretical considerations in transformational leadership are also presented. This type of leadership recognizes the need or personal requirement of a potential follower in search of the fulfillment of needs. As a result, a relation of mutual stimulation and elevation is achieved. Such relationship may turn followers into leaders, leaders into moral agents. One of the main conclusions derived from this research is that transformational leadership theory may be considered as part of the rationalist, analytical, theoretical approach of empirical base, with validation references placed in inter-subjectivity.
