The Gacy children were increased as Catholics and all three attended church member schools where they lived on north side. Growing up, Gacy was the quiet young man who worked odd occupations for spending cash, like bulletin routes and bagging groceries, and busied himself with young man Scout activities. He was not ever an especially popular young man but he was well-liked by his educators, co-workers and friends from school and young man Scouts. He appeared to have the usual childhood, except for his connection with his dad and the sequence of wellbeing problems that he developed.

When Gacy was 11, he was playing on the swing set and was strike in head with one of swings. The misfortune caused the body-fluid clot in his mind that was not discovered until he was 16. He deplored often about it over years but no one could ever find an origin for pain that he claimed to be suffering. In his late teens, he started to know-how troubles with his father, whereas his relationship with his mother and sisters stayed strong. His dad was an alcohol-dependent who physically misused his wife and berated his children.

His family problems expanded out into his schoolwork and after assisting four high schools during his senior year and never graduating, Gacy dropped out and left dwelling for Las Vegas. He worked part time as the janitor in the funeral dwelling and saved his money to purchase the permit back to Chicago. Lonely and depressed, he expended three months endeavoring to get cash together. His mother and sisters were thrilled to glimpse him when he returned.

After his comeback, Gacy registered in Enterprise College and eventually graduated. While in school, he profited genuine gifts for salesmanship and he put these talents to work in the job with Nunn-Bush footwear Company. He excelled as the management trainee and he was soon moved to the men's apparel outlet in Springfield, Illinois. Soon after his move, Gacy's wellbeing took the turn for worse. He profited the great deal of heaviness and started to bear more from his secret heart ailment. He was hospitalized and shortly after getting out, was back in clinic afresh, this time with back problems.

While dwelling in Springfield, Gacy became engaged in some organizations that assisted community, including Jaycees, to which Gacy dedicated most of his efforts and was finally the vice-president and named "Man of Year". Many who knew Gacy advised him to be ambitious and employed to make the title for himself in community.
