Case Background

A large developer has submitted a planning application for the development of a business park. The development would result in the removal of an area of low grade farmland and the diversion of a small river. The application would also result in the loss of a large part of a local nature reserve which had been the focus for a community led conservation scheme.

The developer contends that the office development is consistent with local economic development priorities and will assist new business formation and job creation. The local economy, while stronger than a decade earlier remains fragile and increasingly vulnerable given cut backs in the public sector. The developer has included a landscaping scheme but the local nature reserve will be lost.

There have been independent reports which contest the ability of the development to create additional jobs for local people and suggest that the main impact of the development will be to displace existing local businesses, replacing them with national or multi-national corporations. There are also concerns about the extent to which relationships with the existing local communities will be negatively impacted.

Ethics

The ethics of goods arises from the attempt to overcome the previously targeted relativism and scepticism about the possibility of scientifically known moral law. His key point is thus the affirmation of the real existence of the supreme objective, which, from a practical standpoint, is the ultimate purpose of human existence. The starting point is the assertion that "every agent acts for an end." The particular man aims for, select media, implements and manages to perform them. The assets of each activity are therefore constituted by the pursuit of purpose that is intended to achieve. The supreme good human will, thus, the pursuit and achievement of specific purpose and characteristic of man.

Define the highest good is to define the ultimate goal of human action. However, this position necessarily posits the existence of a hierarchical order, axiological, which leads to that we can locate each specific purpose in its rightful place. The criterion for the establishment of this hierarchy is the examination of the various purposes that man intends to get to their behaviour, determining in each case whether an end in itself or only a means for the sake of an ulterior end. The outcome of this research depends on the affirmation and analytical characterization of the supreme good end in itself, finally, can no longer serve as a starting point or instrument to other achievements. Ethics is a branch of philosophy also known as moral philosophy which addresses questions about concepts such as right and wrong, good and evil, justice, virtue and vice, etc.

The ethics of the environment concentrates on the questions of how we have to use and manage the natural environment and the extent to which one should exercise some moral and ethical constraints their relation to the natural environment.

Particularly the subject of environmental ethics asks the following questions: On what ethical criteria ...
