Ethics in Business

Not everyone benefits from every crisis but many who go through the toughening experience of the change successfully emerge better prepared to meet whatever challenges come their way. For smooth running of any business, companies today have made a commitment to ethics in business. Unethical conduct however on the part of an inside employee is still observed to be in practice even when we live the time of “the ethics crisis”. When speaking of the personal level of ethical issues, one question that comes to mind is that how people should treat one another within an organization? Giving rise to two broader issues: whether or not have the right to look at other people primarily as means to out ends OR whether or not we can avoid doing so. (Cory, 23-24)

The latter issue can no further be discussed since it has no requirement, the former however leads to a more complex subject, and that is, what we are supposed to do in a situation where an unethical behavior is being conducted by someone who o is a colleague and/or a close relative/friend at the same time.

Under any circumstances blowing the whistle on your colleague cum friend is not a good option, and is regarded unacceptable, the negative repercussion for this being that by doing such an activity you are accused for tarnishing the organization's reputation, which is liable to lead to punishment also. The punishment can be, such that being fired and even black listed, that even though the whistle blower thinks of his conduct as an active approach towards the organization and real commitment to it, it is made impossible for him to look for another job in the industry. (Cory, 44-45)

Now whistle blowing on your colleague might even lead to an expansion in his unethical behavior and might increase his discrepancy grievances and would reduce his commitment even more. Also unethical behavior involving fraud, passing out remarks, misinforming and bribery acts can take place on our part also. In short making the environment difficult or you to work in.

Thus further, would lead to lack of communication between the employees. Issues such as politics, conflicts and the organization's cultural disruption having a negative impact on the organization will arise. Of course some situations are so terrible that it is difficult to view them optimistically or just put up a good face on them. What is required is that you take one step at a time do not jump up to conclusions by blowing the whistle.

Dealing with situation as it comes will reduce the problem. This requires planning for each day, as it comes. Such employees are also always under stress and can set the stage for subsequent unsafe acts. For instance under strong pressure the person can set the stage for accidents. They strive to complete the work as quickly as possible, ultimate leading to not being attentive to follow the procedures.
