Evidence-Based Practice and Family Presence

Introduction

The main purpose of this paper is to make a discussion based on Iowa Model that whether the problem addressed in the paper is a priority for nursing or not?

a.Describe EBP and discuss the role of the advanced practice nurse in EBP

The paper presents the Evidence-Based Nursing, including its beginning from the evidence-based medicine and dedicated nurses who attempts to find a suitable definition for the discipline.

Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) has its origins in medicine, beginning its development in Canada since the discipline of clinical epidemiology (Mañalich, 2002), where the group Sackett, in the late 70's is trying to incorporate research clinical decision making for patients (Letelier and Moore, 2003). Another Canadian group led by Guyatt in the 90's promoted the use of mathematical-based research and statistical evidence (Munoz and Cabrera, 2005). At the same time the gap between books and periodical literature facilitated the birth of this new paradigm. Evidence-Based Nursing (EBN) develops later in English-speaking countries, initially taking a positivist framework of medicine (Martinez, 2005). In recent years there have been various definitions of EBE. Thus, in England DiCenso, Cullum, Ciliska & Marks (2000, in Herman, 2003) EBE is defined as "the process by which nurses make clinical decisions using the best available evidence that supported the research, clinical experience and patient preferences in the context of available resources. " At the same time Ingersoll (2000, in Morales, 2003: 38) defines EBE as "conscious, explicit and judicious use of information derived from research-based theory for making decisions about care delivery to individuals or groups taking into account their individual needs and preferences.” And expanding it later to a qualitative paradigm, the First Meeting was held in Granada on EBE 2002 (EBE Observatory, 2006) that provided a new definition that complements the positivist view of the above definitions.

b.Analyze how the Iowa Model guides problem identification.

Iowa Model helps the nurses to identify the problems as this model of evidence based practice which is made to endorse the quality care helps the nurses by giving them a structure so that they can make the rationale decisions based on their daily practices which results in the outcomes of patient care.

The purpose of Iowa model is to make the nurses aware of the different methods, so that they can easily classify the practice questions by either knowing the problem or by getting the more knowledge. Once the problem is identified for the organization, the next step that comes is developing a team that performs the functions of the development, implementation and the evaluation of the changed practice. This team is consisted of either the nurses who have discovered the problem or the stakeholders of that specific practice which has been changed or the unit managers and interdisciplinary colleagues.

This team conducts research and gathers the data based on this evidence. If the data is not sufficient for the research, then the team goes for some other mediums of ...
