Evidence-based Practice Proposal - Section D Solution Proposal

Evidence-based practice (EBP) is a vital constituent of the development of nursing science and has significance for clinical nurses these days. It does well to the nursing discipline, patients, and organizations, in addition to having personal and professional gains for individual clinicians. (Strout et. al., 2009)

The organization that is chosen to be studied is a 40 bed telemetry/ step down unit in a private Methodist hospital in San Antario, Texas. This unit is comprised of very serious patients, ones that are coming out of Intensive Care Unit or serious enough to be transferred in to the ICU. 30 registered nurses and 10 certified nurse assistants are working in this unit. Most of the RNs work in a 12 hour shift.

For the assessment of readiness of organization to adapt the evidence based practice, an outline formulated by Ellen Fincout Overholt and Melnyk Bernadette was used. There are 18 qustions in their designed instrument ranging from commitment of the nursing and other healthcare staff with the EBP and to what extent, EBP is practiced in the unit and the organization as a whole, etc.

The Methodist hospital puts a patient in isolation that has an active MRSA infection or is diagnosed with a nasal swab upon his first entry to the hospital. CDC has defined contact isolation as proper patient placement, gloving, gowning, patient tansport technique, equipment and instrument care and environmental measures. The patient should be placed in private rooms with contact isolation marked on the door, every person should wear gloves upon entry into the room or cubicle, wash hands before and after wearing gloves, gown up while entering room and do no reuse gown when once the person leaves the room, cover and contain the areas of infection when the patients are transported; there are certain criteria for cleaning equipment and rooms after the patient leave.

The objective of this study is to make nurses more familiar with the importance of maintaining correct contact isolation procedures. The study is descriptive in nature and more on review based. 25 nurses are interviewed with having experience with patients in contact isolation.
