It was founded in 1882 in New Jersey under the name of Standard Oil Co. of New Jersey, as amended in Standard Oil Co. in 1892, Exxon Corporation in 1972 and E. Oil and Gas Co. Inc in 1999, after a merger with another U.S. oil giant, Mobil Oil Corporation.
