Abstract

The study is related to family communications and relationships. It focuses on the understanding of families in society; their relationship with educational, governmental, religious and other institutions. The paper consists of issues pertaining to families in society and the potential solution to the issue. The areas of study are related through an extensive review of literature and the solution to the issue based on the context of literature review.

The topic is based on framework of program assessment; it includes six sections which are; introduction about the selected area, Problem related to that area, Literature review, Solution to the problem, Insights and learning and, conclusion.

Introduction

This is a research paper based on the framework of Program assessment. The research involves identification of the focus area, reason of selecting the focused area and problems that are needed to be solved related to that area. The content of the research is evidenced by in-depth review of literature, moreover, the development of solution of the discussed problem based on the literature. In the end, the paper includes insights, learning and conclusion.

Families in Society

The definition of family has been broadened from that of the nuclear family (married parents and their biological children) to include any group of people fulfilling the core function of a family, which is caring and providing for each other. This includes single-parent households, blended families (including children from previous marriages), multigenerational families, unmarried partners, and same-sex couples. Sometimes the legal definition of family has been updated to include such arrangements, for instance by extending employer-based health insurance benefits to unmarried and same-sex domestic partners and their children. The U.S. Census of the year 2000 identified that there were a huge number of households that included same-sex couples and children. The 2006 Current Population Survey estimates that there are families in the United States, which maximum percentage are headed by women (Hampton, 1999). Contemporary Issues and Controversies Despite the tremendous diversity of family structures and types, there are some debates that are central to most discussion of the family.

Families and Government

Government, in society, establishes the legal framework and mechanism for establishing an environment favorable to individuals and families. Government provides a process through which individuals and families are bound to follow laws and participate in the society (Hampton, 1999). Intermediary organizations that we have come to call Nonprofits facilitate the differences between the interests of government and business and correlate the processes of laws with the interests of individuals. In perpetuating tension among government, business, institutions, and the individuals, democracy is preserved and enhanced in a manner that protects the rights and freedoms of families.
