Introduction

Self-assessment, or the desire to know the truth about oneself, is one of four self-evaluation motives that pervade the study of the self. Self-assessment gets characterized by a motivation accurately evaluate one's self or self-concept. A key feature of this motive that distinguishes it from other self-evaluation motives (i.e., self-enhancement, self-verification, and self-improvement) is that people desires accurately evaluate themselves, sometimes at the risk of learning information that is negative with respect to their abilities. Individuals engage in self-assessment to reduce uncertainty about their abilities and self-concepts, or put simply, to increase their self-knowledge. An accurate diagnosis of one's abilities allows individuals to feel confident making predictions regarding their world and their place within the world (Hayes, & Dunning, 1997, 664-677).

The paper focuses upon the notion of faulty self-assessment and highlights the article by Carter and Dunning on the faulty self-assessment and tells the reasons behind the faulty assessment made by individuals and unable in correctly recognizing them. However, the focus is upon the failure to recognise the true competence of a person. There are various reasons that the person fails with their self-evaluation. One of the main reasons as highlighted in the article is the surrounding environment have too much of information which comes as a hindrance while evaluating ourselves. Another major reason that the person fails in self-assessment is because of the biasness in the feedback provided by people and unable to recognise the real hidden capabilities (Hayes, & Dunning, 1997, 664-677).

Discussion

The article by Carter and Dunning emphasizes on the two notions that play an important role in self-assessment of any person. However, the notion is that people will get the high probability of doing faulty self-assessment if these notions get involved; the feedback problems and environmental information drawback. Thus, the people have to tackle these two fundamental notions to gather a successful self-assessment (Lytle, et al. 1998, 53-64).

Environmental Information Drawbacks

The information present in the environment has to be complete and provide the right result that gets needed by the person in the end after completing the task. However, the person needs to get the entire task, and the road map to how the person will complete the task. Moreover, these problems get generated and create various problems in the assessment and create incorrect assessment. However, while discussing with words of similar meaning and closely linked with each other than there can be errors of omission. The person may include the wrong element in the discussion which can lead to wrong understanding of the person. Hence, this notion creates a scenario that the person gets their self-assessment in a wrong way (Huerta, 1995, 8-11).

There are various cases that have the notions of incompetence and knowing the rules of judgment this is because sometimes people fail to create the final understanding of the information.
