Flexible Time in My Organisation

1. Introduction

The history of corporate world reveals that women were not encouraged to work in organisations in the past. Nonetheless, the era of globalization has enhanced the opportunities for women to work in organisations and transform their families from being classified as single income family to dual income family where husband and wife both are working. The flexible work timings and arrangements encouraged by the organisations help the corporate world to retain employees and enhance their efficiency. Due to the flexible work environment stress encountered by the employees is minimal that has positive impact on their productivity and morale.

Flexible work arrangements are simply more acceptable and creative ways of getting work done that allow employees and managers more flexibility in performing their assignments. It also helps reducing commuting time and stress, cut down on overhead expenses in organisation, contribute to reducing pollution, achieve work-family balance, build morale, decrease tardiness and absences and boost productivity. According to the research study conducted by Giannikis and Mihail (2011, 417-432), it can be explored that the concept of flexible work arrangements and its implementation in the workplace possess significant importance for organisations operating around the globe and the workforce.

In addition, another research study conducted by Kossek, Barber & Winters (1999, 33-46) proposed that the transformation of an organisation in a flexible work environment is favourable for the employer and also the employees of the organisation. The flexible workplace concept for an employer or an organisation is concerned with the capability to manage and allocate labour resources effectively in order to satisfy customers' fluctuating needs through optimal supply (Kossek, E. Barber, A. & Winters, D. 1999, 33-46).

1.1 Types of Flexible Work Arrangements

The historical assessment of work timings preferred by most of the organisations was related to the standard of nine-to-five schedule. Nonetheless, the inception of flexible work arrangements blurred the nine-to-five standard as the work timings offered by the organisations fluctuate as per need of employer or employee.
