Forgiveness: A perception and motivation study among married adults

Introduction

Forgiveness is a phenomenon found in all human relationships, and is also a subject of extensive presence in the field of psychotherapy. Nevertheless, it is obvious lack of studies that discuss this issue in Chile. The aim of this paper is to describe the nature of this phenomenon from a psychological perspective, systematizing the main points of consensus and dissent about the concept of forgiveness found in the literature. It also describes the variables that have been associated with forgiveness and some instruments used to measure it. Finally, we discuss the clinical implications of the study of forgiveness and possible future directions for research in this emerging area.

The basic aim of this paper is too analyzed and investigates the perception of motivation among adult married couples and motivation of forgiveness. In this study we used 787 couples which are heterosexual married adults' couples. This study was executed in the region of Flanders in Belgium. Basically it was descriptive analysis and showed that mostly respondents have positive perception for forgiveness.

Literature Review

Forgiveness simply means "forgive the debt", "clear the debt." In other words, to forgive is to sweep away everything that happened and no longer hold it against anyone.

The blame for our mistakes, is one of the worst enemy of man, is hard to bear the guilt of our past mistakes, or the blame for the mistakes of others, but forgiveness is a source of relief for a heart battered by guilt and condemnation .Forgiveness allows us to reach other challenges ahead, such as cement the love, understanding, peace, and freedom.

Forgiveness is a prosocial change in the individual's emotions, thoughts and behavior as a result of a speci?c offense has begun to be accepted commonly. However, there are also studies showing that women are more forgiving than men. Actually, it is stated that avoidance after transgression is more common among men. It is stated that women are more found of protecting their relationships and even that they behave as a relationship expert and therefore they forgive much more, however, men seek justice or revenge in the relationship as a result of transgression more than women. The partners blaming their husbands or wives for his/her negative behavior and considering that the behavior is conducted intentionally show more avoidance and revenge. While the individual thinks that he/she will regain the control having been lost in the relationship by means of revenge, he/she may provide a protection for himself/herself against possible transgressions of the partner by avoiding from relationship or the partner.
