Dr. David Merrill, an industrial psychologist, developed the Social Style Model nearly 40 years ago (Tracom, 1991). Social Style is defined as a particular pattern of actions that others can observe and agree upon for describing a person's behavior. The theory is based upon the analysis of adjective checklists completed by three to five acquaintances of the individual being assessed. Through factor analysis, Merrill identified two reliable scales, which he designated as assertiveness and responsiveness.
