What Are The Future Prospects For Work In Canada?

Introduction

The latest statistical report 2012 of Canada concludes that the biggest challenge faced by immigrants is finding a suitable job. Owing to this fact, concerned voices such as employers and education institutes along with opposition parties has reiterated their appeal to the Federal Government to review the current immigration system and improve/amend it to solve this particular problem which almost every immigrant faces. Statistics found that, even after four years in Canada, immigrants cannot find work in their field. But even in these conditions, the survey showed that 85% were satisfied with their decision to immigrate to Canada. New immigrants are faced with two major challenges - a search for suitable work and learning a new language (English or French). Moreover, lack of recognition of foreign qualifications on the part of Canadian government is another major problem that immigrants face in Canada which put them at disadvantageous position relative to the locals when it comes to employment and education. Although Canadian authorities in recent years have successfully developed a variety of pilot projects for immigrants searching for employment, Government as yet to take concrete actions on certain persistent programs. There is certainly a need to make necessary changes to the assessment system of production workers along with a need for employing “advanced tools for language learning" to help new immigrants to equip themselves with 'prerequisites' and come at par with the locals in their qualifications and abilities. In this essay, we have attempted to explore the future employment prospects for immigrants in Canada and make recommendations as to how they can improve their prospects and land a decent job in their field.

Over 45% of new immigrants who landed a suitable job in the year 2011 in their fields reported that they attended classes to learn English or French. Immigrants not only have more difficulty in finding decent and suitable work, the wage/salary they receive is not really what they expect, based on their skill level. So immigrants not only face problems before securing their jobs, but also face problems after securing them and feel discriminated. The fact that immigrants have more difficulty in the labor market than the Canadian-born can have a negative impact on the economy because the main indicator of the positive impact of immigration on Canadian economy is the success of immigrants in the labor market. This negative impact will show its effects in the near future as more and more immigrants arrive in Canada, which in turn will make the prospects of existing immigrants bleaker (Skuterud & Su, 2012).
