Gangs

Introduction

Gangs have been around for a long time. The crisis of the institutions of socialization such as family, school and work, the inadequacy of consumption patterns that the media construct and that the market produces, reducing opportunities for youth and the need to build mechanisms self-defense, among others, are reasons for their existence. The Gang under discussion in this paper is “Mara Salvatrucha”, which is a prominent name in the world of street gangs in the United States of America.

Gang: Mara Salvatrucha

The name is composed of Mara, the word "Mara" is used as slang for gang. “Salvatore” is used for Salvadorans and “trucha” is the slang for vigilant. According to one theory, the "Mara" means "gang" and the word "Salvatrucha" means Salvadoran guerrillas probably, it is the guerrillas were the first organized structure of the gang in the United States. The second theory draws attention to the fact that "La Mara" is one of the main streets of the capital of El Salvador, San Salvador (Williams, 1992). The word "Salvatrucha" is to be a combination of the words "Salvadorian" and "trucha," the determination of the slang meaning a warning against the approaching policemen. Mara Salvatrucha is also commonly abbreviated "MS" or "MS-13."

Structure of Mara Salvatrucha

The Maras are in the lowest level of the so-called Mara Salvatrucha, depending on the estimate that there are from ten to 70 members. In El Salvador, this is referred to as big as in Honduras. There are also Maras, where the leader would be limited in time and changes constantly. Most Maras are with the road district or their area is very closely related to the district. Leading the gang is now a mystery to law enforcement officials, gang boss is a man called "TRUS", widely regarded as the leader of a gang of one of the Salvadoran prisons, not known for its accurate data or place of residence (Buford, 1991). The gang members who are currently starring with him are afraid to give accurate information about it. Gang developed a characteristically non-verbal communication system.

Mara Salvatrucha consists of loosely related cliques. The most brutal of them is the notorious "MS-18" and "Sombra Negra" (Johnson, et al, 1990). Mara Salvatrucha included only citizens of Central America - El Salvador, Nicaragua, Honduras and Guatemala. Brutal methods used by the gang are the result of the fact that it was created by people who have experienced their own eyes the bloody nightmare of civil war in El Salvador. In terms of acts of bloody revenge, MS-13 beats all the other gangs operating in North and South America (Feldman, Mandel, & Fields, 1985).

Recruitment of Mara Salvatrucha

Mara Salvatrucha is known for its brutal laws which apply to members of the gang to become a member you must pass the initiation of which involves the killing of a rival gang member, " The 18th street” (Williams, 1992) .
