Gender Concept

Introduction

Gender is a constructed concept'. Discuss this statement. The statement is already highlighting the constructive part of the topic, knowing that this Gender development is constructive or not is learned after doing an analysis of Gender discriminations that are practised mostly in every other society.

Gender, in its narrowest sense, means socially constructed sex, be it female or male. It was in the 1970's that American and English feminists started using the terms “gender” and “gender relations”. Hence the transition was made from “study of the differences between the sexes... to relations between the sexes both in the sense of social relations and conceptual relations”. (Hurtig, et al . 1991). This word gender was first introduced in early 1980's in almost all the English regions. This word is simply generated in order to create a synonym for the word Sex. Therefore it can be used in a good sounding way.

The above definition has some implications on the word gender. A gender concept is implying the following aspect in it;

“A rejection of the underlying biological distinction in the word “sex” and in the expression “sexual inequality”, which appears as “an ideological alibi for maintaining domination, the alibi of nature” (Hurtig, et al, 1991). Therefore, it states that women doesn't belong to the part of nature anymore, only man has this leisure of enjoying the cultural aspects of the gender in societies.

The statement that is referred above has solid evidence that it involves all the constructive elements of any gender since the day it develops its genes. Therefore, gender basically implies the knowledge of sex differences. However knowledge itself is the way of organizing all the practices of the world, it is much like a power is actually not determined and never finite; it keeps on changing with the flow of changes surrounds us. Similarly, the same is the concept for opposite sexes that keeps on changing and can change with the change in society.

It is true saying that gender dynamic is essential concept which always brought the question of apparent immutability in the social roles. Apart from all of these theories it is correct to say that woman comes in the category of nature which involves their sentiments, instinct and irrationality. Whereas, man has been noticed in the category of culture- which involves his mental maturity ...
