George Washington was the first President of the United States between 1789 and 1797.He was a Chief of the Continental Army in the Revolutionary War of Independence of the United States (1775 - 1783). He is considered one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. In September 1796 President George Washington sent his Farewell Address to a Philadelphia newspaper. The address circulated around the nation and served two purposes: It let the public know that Washington would not run for reelection and it offered the country some final advice. In 1789 he was president of the Philadelphia convention, in charge of drafting the U.S. Constitution. .
