Georgia O''Keeffe

Introduction

Georgia O'Keeffe was an American artist, famous for the purity and brilliance of his still lifes. O'Keeffe was the second of seven children, was born November 15, 1887 in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. Education was important in the family O'Keeffe, and, as such, all children were well educated. O'Keeffe had a preference for art at a very young age. She does not remember what prompted her to only art that she knew she wanted to be an artist. At 16, O'Keeffe received five years of training in various art schools. She also studied art at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League of New York. Despite winning the League William Merritt Chase died price for his oil painting Untitled (Dead Rabbit with Copper Pot), O'Keeffe was dissatisfied with his paintings. She worked as a teacher in Amarillo, Texas from 1912-1914. During the summers, O'Keeffe has worked as assistant Alon Bement of Teachers College, Columbia University. There she met Arthur Wesley Dow, who introduced the idea that art is the expression of the artist's personal ideas and feelings, or simply fill a space in a beautiful way. She loved this new way of thinking. She had finally realized that all his work was influenced by somebody else. She said, "I have things in my head that are not like what someone told me ... shapes and ideas so near to me ... so natural to my way of being and did not think it occurred to me to put down .."(13 by Ellen).

At 27, she started over. It started with charcoal sketches. After she had done everything she could think with coal, she moved to the paint. It was a rebirth for O'Keeffe, a new wife and the artist has emerged. Recalling this period, she wrote: "I grew up almost like everyone is growing and one day seven years ago I found myself saying - I can live wherever I want - I can not go where I want to - I can not even say what I want. school and things that painters have taught me even keep me from the picture I want to do. I decided that I was a very stupid fool not to at least the picture I wanted when I painted as that seemed the only thing I could do that does not concern anybody but myself - that was nobody's business but mine. Thus, these paintings and drawings of events and many other things with colors and shapes that I could not say any other way - things I had no words for "(Nicholson 51). She had finally let out the inner voice. This was the beginning of his career.
