CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

The concept of financial globalisation is undoubtedly one of the most commonly used concept in the late twentieth century. The globalisation of the economy has upset the order and functioning of the economy: it acts on changing the rules of competition, the expansion of trading zones (transition a business "inter-national" trade "inter-regional"), the uniform culture and also on the exploitation of poorer countries. (Pudelko 2008, 2045). Some even accuse globalisation as the cause of the increase in unemployment in developed countries because of the relocation of production sites in countries of the developing world. Globalisation is not, however, as the media suggest, a recent phenomenon. (Poon 2007, 133)

Problem Statement

The beginnings of globalisation appeared with IBM and SINGER, the U.S. multinationals which have managed to conquer the world markets through internationalizing their activities and making boundaryless operations with customers around the globe. This logic of market access remains crucial in the development of direct investment abroad. (Michie 2008, 445)
