Introduction

This section discusses the impact of globalization and increasingly international perspective on business in operations management. We examine the following issues like nature of operation management, globalization issues, and relevance of these issues now and in the future of operation management. Globalization is primarily changed in the views of the world, thoughts, civilization or culture. It is defined as the process of raising the connectivity and autonomy of the international market. According to the famous economist “Globalization is the closer integration of the countries and peoples of the world brought about by the enormous reduction of costs of transportation and communication, and the breaking down of artificial barriers to the flows of goods, services, capital, knowledge, and people across borders” (Stiglitz from Globalization and its Discontents). It has a vast impact on operation management which can be defined as to undertake with the management of the services, supply chains, and different analytical processes. In this session, we see how globalization make operation management easier by the contribution of different tools like internet, advancement in infrastructure of telecommunication, easy to work with different tools, transportation of incompatible goods etc.

Globalization

The economic development can be related with the socio-economic term “Globalization”. In other words, it is prolong process on a global level of development of different societies, culture, civilization, traditions, and economies put together with each other by means of exchange of thoughts and different communication medium. If anybody has the idea of globalization, individual can understand the grounds which plays an important role in social and monetary change. The concept of globalization is not new. Thousands year ago people used to travel and cover long distances for the purpose of trading. The road which connects Europe to china named as Silk Road, during the middle age different merchants travel by the side of Silk Road for the sake of trading.

Nature of Operations Management

If we take a look around us, we are surrounded by the outcomes of operation management. Everything present in nature has been designed or created by someone like building, airplanes, furniture, clothes, toys, cosmetics, jewelry, travelling motor vehicles, even the food we eat are created by the people engaged in the process of operation. Operation management is in fact, sustaining most human commotion and forms the society in which we exist (Robinson 2010, p. 5).

Operation management is to undertake with the management of the services, supply chains, and different evaluative processes. It also deals with the development, acquisition and also deployment of resources that are necessary to bring the wares and services to their customers. The ranges of the operation management are from calculated to technological and process levels and it also represent the strategic issues which include calculation of the size and the area of the plants in which manufacturing occurs.
