Challenges and Problems in Modern Health Care Service

Introduction

Many great changes have been observed in healthcare and social care service industry. It has provided significant advantages in reforming the operations, and added value in maximizing the effectiveness of the service quality. It is essential to ensure the quality of service while maximizing the output. Reforming the organizational policies and operational procedures creates ambiguity to certain extent that raises question on the communication channel of the service (Kuhlmann 2006, p. 32).

In last few decades, Hospitals in healthcare service have taken an active approach in enhancing the efficacy by professional management system. It plays an integral role in improving the performance of the hospital; however, require consideration on managing the issues that arise during transformation process. These issues range in multiple dimensions which include ethics, management approach, concern towards welfare, rights protection of people associated with the service, and relationship management with the stakeholders (Akbulut 2010, p. 539).

Internal issues include managing workplace diversity, enhancing communication effectiveness, and managing the change process by involvement of employees. These issues have created significant problems in Turkish healthcare system which directly impacted their hospital service efficiency, deterioration of financial structure, decreasing quality system, and inefficient healthcare system (Akbulut 2010, p. 542).

In order to address these problems, Health Transformation Programme was initiated in 2003. Main purpose of the programme was to increase hospital autonomy and implementation of change oriented system. This involved considerable change in the organization management, decision-making structure, role of employees in goal setting, setting a proper line of hierarchy, and improving the coordination between line staff and operational core heads (Akbulut 2010, p. 545). A great change was observed in workplace diversity dimension, communication channel, and amendment in policies to increase performance.

Analysis of Challenges and Problems

Hospital Management System in Turkey encompasses certain benefits that shows deterministic outcome of Health Transformation Programme implementation. Factors addressed in the programme created certain hierarchical problems in the organizational structure. Hospitals increased their performance by utilizing diverse workforce resource which resulted in organizational conflicts specific to certain departments and role based position (Baxter 2001, p. 262).

This places responsibility on the management to focus on the root causes of the conflicts to actively management conflict at workplace. Increase in workplace diversity in hospitals created certain cultural challenges as people from different ethnic backgrounds gathered at a platform representing the mutual interest of social welfare. It requires managing the power distances between members and serving the mutual interest over individual interest (Gardenswartz 1999, p. 104).

In particular situations, cultural group formation started inside the hospitals resisting against management decisions. Specifically, gender based roles distribution resulted in biasness towards particular gender. Male dominancy seemed to override the regulations regarding the involvement of opposite gender in key decision makings.
