Chapter 1: Introduction

Introduction of Study

This paper will shed light on Asperger's syndrome, and by discussing a combination of recreational activities and appropriate social curriculum, it will look to help the students with the disorder to function better socially. Moreover, it will also delve into the issue of the students with AS being subjected to bullying, and will try to come up with methods through which such children could be protected from being intimidated and bullied, so that their social performance could be improved.

Purpose of Study

The purpose of this study is to address an issue which is becoming a major concern, as far as children with AS are concerned; the social performance of AS children needs to be enhanced and the issues which face them, such as bullying. In addition, since the existing literature on the subject is minimalistic and insufficient, thus there is a growing need to make useful additions to it, and as such, a better understanding of the students with Asperger disorder and effective measures to improve their social performance will be discussed through this paper.

Rationale of Study

It is worth carrying out this study since this paper will look to address a serious issue, which concerns students with AS and will try and present effective measures for such children to stand up to bullying, thus making this study an important one in terms of improvement in the social functioning of students with Asperger's syndrome.

Significance of Study

The importance of carrying out this study is to make a meaningful contribution to the literature which already exists on the subject. The paper focuses on the better functioning of students with AS, through an appropriate social curriculum and recreational activities, which will help the students in better social functioning. Moreover, bullying, which is a major issue for such students, will be dealt with at length through the course of this paper, since it is felt that there is not much emphasis on such topics in the existing literature.
