H 301: To what degree was the War for American Independence a revolutionary war?

The American Revolution is not a proper Revolution. According to Dr. Grant, the definition of revolution is people taking action based on violence against their rulers because they wish for a radical change or abolishment of the traditional orders (Grant, 2003, no. 20). It can be said that the French Revolution falls perfectly under this definition, but the American Revolution unfortunately does not. The Americans did not seek a radical restructuring of the society, instead the people of the time wished to preserve the traditional rights (Woods, pp. 11). It can be said that the whole event can simply be called the America War of Independence or American Reformation. The people wished to reform the Government of England so that the colonies are able to be constitutionally governed. It was not a revolution, instead it was simply a fight where the Americans broke the chains of their British overlords and won their self-government and freedom (Woods, pp. 14)
