Introduction

The Pacific war is also known as Asia-Pacific War and it refers to some parts of World War II as well. The name has been given because it took place in the Pacific Ocean and in East Asia that was previously known as Far East. This paper analyzes the prewar preparation of the Pacific war by United States and Japan. World War II was a military conflict from 1939 to 1945 that resulted killing of 62 million people on the battlefield, in massive bombings of civilians in cities, and by genocide. There were two hostile camps; the Axis Powers of Germany, Italy, Japan, Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Croatia, Slovakia, Finland (cobelligerent), Thailand, and others; and the Allied Powers of the British Empire and common wealth (Evans, et.al, pp. 1).

Main Points

Japan's Intentions

When Japan entered World War II, their aims were limited and they did not intend to fight a big war. The main objectives of Japan were to secure the resources of Southeast Asia and China in order to establish a "Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere," which they wanted under Japanese control. Important objectives of Japan were achieved by them in 1895 and in 1905. This was after they defeated China and Russia completely. Similarly, the country also wanted control on East Asia. The strategy that was adopted by Japan with regards to operation was to limit the conflict. Moreover, they also believed that neutralizing the American power in the Pacific was important. Therefore, they aimed to control certain areas that included U.S. Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor and the U.S. Far East Air Force that was located in the Philippines. After this, Japan also aimed to occupy Malaya, Netherlands Indies, Philippines, Wake Island, Guam, the Gilbert Islands, Thailand, and Burma. After having control on these, the Japanese aimed to set defensive perimeter. Japan was of the opinion that the Allies would settle down for peace. However by doing so, Japan invited destruction and war (Fullenkamp,pp. 76).

Japan was with war in Manchuria before World War II began. However, by 1941, confrontation was made by the Japanese military in Asia-Pacific region, which made the war with the United States certain. In order to prepare for the war, 12,000 strong Philippine Scouts were bought by General Douglas MacArthur in 1941. Moreover, there were 16,000 American soldiers who were stationed in the Philippines. However, they were not trained adequately and did not have proper equipment to defense the islands. American aircrafts were completely destroyed at the Pearl Harbour.
