History of Haiti

Abstract

In this research paper, we will discuss the history of Haiti. We will come to know about the time of the Revolution onwards, the research is to study the impact upon Haitian life up to the present day, and why the 2010 earthquake had such a devastating impact upon the country. I have investigated the different areas, Haiti faced in trying to rebuild after the earthquake. The racial caste system in place in Haiti prior to the Revolution, The events of the Revolution and the effect they had upon the infrastructure of the colony, The 1825 settlement between Haiti and France, and how that affected Haiti's future. The paper will describe the relationship between the US and Haiti in detail, and events from 1915 to 1934. The purpose of this paper is to emphasize the events from Haiti's history.

History of Haiti

Introduction

Cristopher Columbus invaded this island in 1492 and he named it “La Isla Espanola”. This island was a treasure Britain, Spain & France because of its location & lush soil. In 17th Century, Haiti became a French Colony. In early stages, this island was known as St. Domingue, but now it is known as Republic of Haiti. The Revolution of Haiti (1791-1804) was a major event in history of New World. This revolution is due to the slave revolt. Haiti from the time of the Revolution onwards, have had a major impact upon Haitian life up to the present day, and were a contributory factor in the 2010 earthquake had such a devastating impact upon the country and subsequent efforts to rebuild. Revolution of Haiti was due to the elite that ruled there for a long time and does not share the economic & political power. It's the 1st Black state of New World. In 2010, an earthquake destroyed Haiti at large. It affected the infrastructure of Haiti; The National Palace & the Parliament also got infected by the earthquake. Many of them lost their homes, but by the span of time, they settled down.

Racial Caste System

The racial caste system in Haiti before the revolution is very bad. They are divided in different caste systems and lived like slave. Especially the black persons are treated harshly before the revolution. The racial conflicts and the political instability are the major issues that began the revolt of 1795. The white-skinned thinks that the black person cannot be a General or King. One of the most important factors of this revolution is the racial caste system they have. Before revolution, they are divided into three caste system, which are the grands blancs, the petits blancs, and the gens de couleur. The top two castes are of the white population, and they are enjoying wealth & social freedom while the third caste consisted of mixed population, and they also have the freedom to some extent.
