HOMOSEXUALITY COUNSELLING

Homosexuality Counselling

Organisation of the chapter

This study investigates the impact of the sexual orientation and the measures of attitude in respect to gays and lesbians. The investigation wants to inquire of how much is counselling helpful to the overall perspective. The attitude, values and the positive behaviour that may interrelate during the sexual orientation of participants are all to be seen.

Sexual orientation refers to the object of desire or love for a subject, as a manifestation in the whole of his sexuality. Parts of the concepts are built in schools derived from psychoanalysis and psychoanalysts structuralists. The orientation and sexual identity are issues that, according to the experiences that one has, can be extremely simple or terribly problematic. Both orientation and sexual identity are configured from birth, through a process of learning and socialisation. This learning process is influenced by many factors such as personal characteristics, emotional experiences, environmental influences (family, friends, school, media, etc). The identity must be created and recreated in an order much more active than before and which explains why treatment and counselling of all kinds are becoming so popular in the West (Adelman, 2008).

People theoretically have modern great prejudice against homosexuality. All this means that, for some people, confirmation and acceptance of their sexual orientation is a challenging process, both by the difficulty of assuming, for the reaction of the environment (Adelman, 2002).

Trying to identify and reduce homophobic attitudes seems to be the only rational way to achieve a better understanding and better integration of homosexuality and different orientations to society. As stated above, sexual orientation is taking shape at birth, but emerges in adolescence (but may change over a lifetime). What happens is that adolescence is a period full of changes, desire to experiment, knowing oneself and relating to others. This desire for new experiences means that, on occasion, have fantasies or homosexual acts carried out for various reasons (fear of relationships with the opposite sex, to try something new, etc.). However, this does not decide final form of sexual orientation. These experiences can be the result of a period of indecision, personal experimentation, etc. There are many people who have been having any homosexual practice, consolidating their ...
