CHAPTER 3: METHODOLOGY

The basic objective of our research is to identify and highlight the role of human resource management strategy in improving Maersk's performance in the global shipping industry. Maersk Supply Service is known for providing safe, reliable and efficient supply services in the global gas and oil industry. Maersk is regarded as a reliable name and is considered to be a market leader in providing supply services around the world (Rose, 2000, pp. 139). For over forty years, the company has provided unparalleled supply services in most parts of the world. Our major emphasis in the dissertation was to identify the different variables involved in incorporating effective human resource strategy for improving Maersk's performance in the global shipping industry.

Human Resource Strategy (HRS) is defined as "a pre-determind set of procedures and activities that are shared by the employees and their respective line managers for solving a wide variety of core business related issues" (Schuler & Walker, 1990, pp. 15). For every organization aiming to expand and increase its revenues; an effective human resource strategy is vital for the achievement of its goals and for improved everyday activities. Maersk, being the market leader in the global supply industry, needs to conform to a well speculated and developed HRS to cope up with the challenges of the business and increasing competition in today's globalized world. In our dissertation, we intended to identify how Maersk Supply Service can effectively use its human resource strategy to expand its business in the global shipping industry.

Maersk Supply Service is a major provider of global offshore marine services. The company's fleet comprises of technologically advanced vessels; and provides a wide range of services to its clients. Maersk primarily tends to cater the anchor handling and rig moving needs of the gas and oil industry. Hence, a well developed human resource strategy is required to deal with the operational and support business needs of the organization. Maersk continues to serve the offshore industry with a fleet of more than 60 vessels operated by more than 2,000 crew members and supported by a little over 250 trained onshore professionals.
