How can teachers improve diversity in the Classroom?

Statement of the problem

The term diversity means “differences”. Diversity among people could be on the basis of gender, race and ethnicity, language, age, religion, culture or socio-economic status; these differences among individuals make them different from each other. The purpose of this study is to find out how teachers can improve the diversity in the classrooms, and the possible research tools that can be used to improve diversity in their classrooms.

Rationale

In a classroom, a teacher is likely to come across students from different races, ethnicity, religions and linguistic backgrounds. Some diversity may be in the form of students having different style of learning, different behavior, different point of views, different mental level and individual psychology. A teacher should be responsive enough to realize the diversity of every student and understand the importance of treating them accordingly.

A classroom could be a mixture of students with different racial and cultural backgrounds; a teacher can manage the diversity of students in many ways, for example, a teacher can encourage students to explore each other culture and ethnological perspective, helping students to develop a clear understanding to avoid any conflict and exploitation on the basis of race and background through certain activities and projects.

A teacher should make sure that the classroom is a secure place for all students regardless of their backgrounds by keeping healthy environment and good atmosphere among students. In addition, a teacher should know how to handle the arguments and conflicts among students. This should be done on the basis of justice and equality, and there should be no discrimination. Syllabus should be designed by giving importance to different cultures and backgrounds of students; to make sure that all students of different cultures have an interest in the study material provided by the teacher. A teacher can make proper rules and regulations of the classroom that will guide the students about the behavior in the classroom to avoid any misconduct.

A teacher should have personal interaction with students in order to get a better understanding of every individual's culture, background, race/ethnicity, religion and language. An interaction with other teachers and sharing the experiences about the diversity of their classroom can help a great deal to manage the classroom diversity. The classroom can celebrate “Cultural Days” so that the students can enjoy different traditions and they can also bring their traditional foods to share it with other students.

Teacher can invite role models as a guest speaker to share their experiences to the class; these role models should be successful individuals from different backgrounds and cultures so that the students can get an opportunity to gain knowledge and learn something from these individuals. In this way, the students can get a chance to interact with these individuals to know their secret of success regardless of their different backgrounds.
