HSBC Bank's Corporate Social Responsibility with Its International Management Strategy

HSBC Bank is one of leading banks in the United States. It has around 3.5 million customers in the country. Its financial growth and performance is outstanding as its current share value is on the top among all the banks in the United Kingdom. As the banking industry is facing many challenges in the world, most of the banks are concerned about the customer journey experience and its potential information that provides them new customers and maximize their time value. Therefore, we can say that the CSR activities at the HSBC can be considered as a tool for gaining more customer base, market share and to minimize the competitive rivalry. At HSBC, CSR is the concept of creating a good sense of business.

CSR Activities at HSBC are not limited to one domain. Instead it is an integrated approach in multiple domains. HSBC Group emphasize on education and social development, consumer education, ethical banking, corporate governance, environmental protection, and HSBC Climate Partnership. Consumer education is related to providing investment to help consumers understand financial investment and associated risks. HSBC believes in social and economic development of people by creating employment in under-developed countries. These countries include China, Philippines, Malaysia, India, and Sri Lanka where HSBC has contributed in creating 20,000 jobs directly and indirectly. HSBC aims at creating a culture where employees are given opportunity to use their skills, knowledge, and languages.

The CSR Strategy at HSBC is divided into three segments. These revolve around United Nations Environment Program, Global Compact, and Global Sullivan Principles to present the commitment of the company. HSBC Group launched a series of programs in last decade for environmental protection and development of children through project financing to alleviate poverty and social problems present in society. Climate Group, a part of CSR activity is working in Beijing, Hong Kong, Toronto, New York, Chicago, London, and Mumbai to reduce pollution level in these cities. As part of this effort, in 2009, Climate Group of CSR Activity organized a Carbon Reduction campaign in Hong Kong, made an alliance with Mumbai Energy to initiate large scale energy efficiency projects in Mumbai. Similar to the kind of effort, another remarkable effort of HSBC as part of its CSR activity is the Eco-School Climate Initiative in partnership with the Foundation for Environmental Protection. This activity was run in 10 countries in which more than 1,000 volunteers participated with more than 1.2 million target audience participation of people age between five to eighteen years (HSBC CSR, 2010).
